…..and the winner is….????

Disclaimer—I have Covid. I warn you not for fear you will catch it through your phone or laptop—moreso because this will likely not be one of my better(or coherent) posts…I’m also aware I did not post about Jamey’s 7th anniversary yet on 04/19/22. I will. Soon…

Well, leave it to Caeley and me to post a nearly last-minute blog on the last day of college decisions! She inherits her exquisite procrastination skills from both Jamey and me(although, to be fair, she did actually commit a few weeks ago—I’m just getting around to posting it now).

She is now officially a University of Rhode Island Rhody. She was accepted into the College of Nursing and will be starting in the Fall 22 semester.

Maybe it’s my inner old lady kicking in, but “back in my day” I don’t remember this being such a tortuous task.

The last few months especially have been a whirlwind of waiting on acceptance letters, then subsequently waiting on financial aid packages(or lack thereof ) in some cases, then booking hotel rooms, then booking another hotel room for the same trip because I couldn’t find the original booking. Then finding the original booking and realizing it was too late to cancel either booking so having two hotel rooms booked. Oh—and don’t even get me started on our Columbus trip where I doused Caeley and myself in gasoline(unintentionally, mind you).

So yeah—some silly and crazy bumps on the road along the way.

But Caeley was lucky enough to have been accepted to all of the schools she applied to, which on one hand is a great thing.

One the other, however, you’re left with the paradox of choice….sometimes having too much to choose from increases anxiety over those choices.

And when you’re a really choosy person like Caeley, that can be challenging.

By early April, she’d narrowed it down to really only two schools(there were 3 at one point, but after a very unfortunate wardrobe incident at James Madison’s Accepted Student’s day, the Dukes were dropped off the list—HOWEVER-silver lining, we skipped out of JMU and found a prom dress 3 miles down the road from campus….how many people can say they drove 5 hrs to buy a prom dress?!?!)

With JMU knocked out of the tourney, it was down to the last two—THE Ohio State(and yes, you must refer to it as such—Buckeyes insist on it) and the University of Rhode Island(you can just call them URI—they’re not so persnickety).

I know that most of you don’t really know Jamey and aside from some really close friends and family, I don’t know that most people see the significance of those two schools.

Jamey attended both URI and Ohio State.

He was only at URI for his first year, but did make a name for himself as kicker on the rugby team(thanks, soccer skills). As mentioned in previous blogs, he went to grad school at Ohio State.

Sure, there was a Rider and a LaSalle(finished his bachelor’s and his MBA) that she could’ve chosen from as well, but both were too close to home—literally.

I would’ve been happy with Caeley winding up at any school she chose as long as she was happy there.

But knowing that she’ll be walking the same pathways and possibly hallways and crowding into dank, dingy frat house basements (drinking water since she will always be the designated driver) as her dad makes me feel that much more secure.

Life’s come full circle on us, Jamey.

The Little One is grown.

—Congrats to all the HS seniors who decided by today!

—-And to those choosing military, gap year, trade or the workforceCongrats on not paying off student loans until you’re 75!!

  1. That is so awesome to hear your little one is approaching another rite of passage to adulthood.
Prayers for you all and an early wish for blessings on Mother’s day to you. Lots of gentle days of gratitude and peace on my end, hoping the same for you.
    Peace and all good,

  2. Welcome to my world of college counseling. And since I’m a glutton for punishment, I live this every year with my students! Haha! I’m thrilled for Cael and for the adventures that await! URI is a great choice and I am feeling sentimental since Jamey also attended! By the way, I found out that my bio-cousin’s daughter will also be a freshman at URI; may their paths will cross. Congratulations, Cael!
